Fishing

Alaska's Wilderness Lodge provides trophy fishing for salmon, rainbow trout, grayling, char, Dolly Vardon, Northern Pike, and other freshwater game fish.  We specialize in all five species of Pacific Salmon and Trophy Rainbow Trout.  We happily accommodate any and all fishing styles with the best equipment available.  For example, for spin fisherman we provide Loomis rods and Shimano reels, and for fly fisherman we provide Sage rods with Lampson reels.  Of course, you can always use your own equipment, if you prefer.  Our three Beaver aircraft allow us to access all the waters of the Bristol Bay drainage in safety and comfort.  We are constantly looking for new waters and are always discovering new "favorite places" for our guests.  Whatever type of fishing you do, whatever equipment you use, and whatever species you target, we will create a dream vacation for you!.

Pacific Salmon have unique runs throughout the season.  The species that you prefer to fish for will determine the optimum time to come to the lodge.  Rainbow trout, grayling, char, and other species are available throughout the year, although the last two weeks of the season are well known for large Trophy Rainbows.

Salmon season begins with the arrival of the mighty King, or Chinook Salmon.  The first Kings usually arrive the second week in June and continue their run through the end of July.  The Kings are the biggest of the Pacific Salmon.  Every year we routinely catch fish over 50 pounds.  Unlike other lodges, AWL does not open until the Kings have started their run up the rivers.  Our first week usually sees the fish very fresh and VERY aggressive.

Sockeye, or Red Salmon run starts in early July.  Sockeyes enter the rivers by the millions.  Just about ever river system in the Bristol Bay drainage gets a run of Sockeyes.  They spawn and die thereby providing the life sustaining nutrients for the entire ecosystem.  Sockeyes, while not as big as the other species of salmon provide great fun on light tackle.  Many people will start their day fly fishing for Sockeyes and then switch to spin fishing gear when their arm gets tired of catching them on the fly rods!

Chum and Pink Salmon start arriving in mid July and last through most of August.  Chum Salmon are often overlooked as a game fish, but are tremendous fighters.  Pink Salmon only run on even numbered years (2000, 2002, 2004, etc.), but when they run they come in LARGE numbers.  They seem to be everyone and its hard to keep them off your line!  The period from mid July through early August has the greatest variety of salmon available and is perfect time to come for families, or people who want to sample a variety of Alaska freshwater fishing opportunities.

Silver, or Coho Salmon arrive in mid August and stay through the end of the fishing season.  Silvers are well know for their aggressive takes and acrobatic fights.  Its a real thrill to catch one of these on a fly rod, but its also a workout.  Many of our guest like to target both Silvers and Rainbow trout by coming during September.  That makes September a very popular time at Alaska's Wilderness Lodge.  If you want to come for trophy Silvers and Rainbows during September, you'll need to book early.

Whatever time of year you come, whatever species of trophy freshwater fish you want to target, and whatever type of fishing you do, AWL will make your trip one to remember.  The chart at the left shows the peak times for the various fish to help you plan your vacation better.  Call us if you have any questions about our fishing program.  We are happy and proud to discuss this with you.
